The main uses of bromide include treating neurasthenia, neurogenic insomnia, mental excitement and anxiety, as well as industrial applications. ‌

Bromide is mainly used in the medical field to treat symptoms such as neurasthenia, neurogenic insomnia, and mental excitement and anxiety. The bromides used in clinical practice include potassium bromide, sodium bromide, and ammonium bromide, commonly known as "tribromide". These compounds exist in the form of tablets, solutions, and mixtures, and are used to alleviate symptoms related to the nervous system.

In industrial applications, bromides often coexist with chlorides, especially in seawater, where the content of bromides is approximately one third of that of chlorides. In addition, bromides are also distributed in rock salt deposits, mineral springs, and salt lakes. In industry, it is mainly used to extract bromine from brine in salt fields or from waste liquid in alkali production industry. By introducing chlorine gas into the above solution or waste liquid to replace elemental bromine, then absorbing it with sodium carbonate or calcium carbonate, and finally acidifying it with sulfuric acid to re precipitate elemental bromine. Liquid bromine is rarely directly applied, and a large amount of bromide is widely used.

In addition, bromides are also used in medicine to synthesize sedatives and anesthetics, and are excellent solvents for high-purity metal extraction. They are used as basic raw materials for the production of various inorganic bromides such as sodium bromide, potassium bromide, lithium bromide, and calcium bromide, as well as certain alkyl bromides such as bromomethane and bromoethane.
